- Todd tells me I should have posted this in here instead of on my page.Todd tells me I should have posted this in here instead of on my page.I'm going to start writing about things that happen at GC. I've told no one about this, but feel it's time now - I'll get the whole story out this week, in parts.
1/ Story time. 6-7 years ago, a gentleman called me and wanted to chat about a coin. In fact, he was rather cryptic at first, just referencing that he had a coin and he bought it a long time ago. Of course, I immediately asked "What's the coin?". But he was not ready to tell me. He said something like "let's just pretend it's a coin that you would want to auction". Being an auction house, of course, I want to auction almost any coin, and I didn't need to pretend to want to. While on the phone, I looked him up in our system, which showed two small invoices with our company (looking them up again now, the first two invoices were $46.10 and $35.76). He had questions about lead-time for auctions, and how we did certain things - I think I spent 20 minutes on the phone, and then he ended it with "next time I call, let's see if you can guess what the coin is, I'll be in touch". I wrote in my notes, "mystery coin?". To be continued.

- I do not following modern coins - I was guessing wrong and miss the date and type by hundred of years. Great story and looks like it will be a fairy book ending ( or should I say a start of a long journey pedigree history) for this piece. - 2/ A few weeks went by, and again, the gentlemen called and without saying his name, he said "Ian, have you thought what the coin is?". Of course, I didn't want to play a guessing game, he gave me zero hints. I said I didn't know, and he had more questions about our auctions. He won a few more coins, including a $900 coin, and he said he loved how we conducted our auctions.
He then explained he was not ready to sell his *coin*, but still wanted me to guess what it was. I made a couple of guesses and he started to give me hints to narrow down the possibilities. By the end of this call (the second time we had spoken), I had an idea of country, era and since he is portraying it as a special coin, my mind was going to the more valuable possibilities. As I was getting close, he again ended the call and said he would be in touch again when he was ready and he expected by the next call that I would know what his coin was. I had my note page from the first call titled "mystery coin?" with my guesses crossed out and a couple of words circled. - Any consideration to filming short videos of coins, to better see luster? 5 second videos of the coin rotating back and forth a few degrees, using an automated platform seems doable.Any consideration to filming short videos of coins, to better see luster? 5 second videos of the coin rotating back and forth a few degrees, using an automated platform seems doable.
- PetesQuarterLifeCrisis I'm genuinely curious -- are other auction houses doing that? I haven't seen that on Heritage Auctions or Stack's Bowers.[PetesQuarterLifeCrisis] I'm genuinely curious -- are other auction houses doing that? I haven't seen that on Heritage Auctions or Stack's Bowers.
- Tony No I haven't seen anyone doing it, but I watch coin auctions on WhatNot from time to time and the video is very helpful. If it was higher res and short clips, I think it would make a huge difference in seeing the coins before you buy them. That luster can really hook you.[Tony] No I haven't seen anyone doing it, but I watch coin auctions on WhatNot from time to time and the video is very helpful. - PetesQuarterLifeCrisis Thanks for the reply. I was curious because I've only seen that done in one place -- The Royal Canadian Mint. They make nice short videos rotating their coins. But since their coins are brand new, I expect to see nice luster.[PetesQuarterLifeCrisis] Thanks for the reply. I was curious because I've only seen that done in one place -- The Royal Canadian Mint. - PetesQuarterLifeCrisis Heritage offered to do a video presentation on a coin I ended up having to buy back in their auction due to very poor representation. This was over 5 years ago and as I recall they wanted an extra $500.00 on top of the commission. - Thank you everyone for your feedback - it's interesting to note what you saw as relatively new. In this case, it was the speed of our images loading. Last time we made a massive server upgrade, no one noticed, even though pages were loading in half the time. This update was purely for images, and is so important as we continue to post higher quality and larger images.Thank you everyone for your feedback - it's interesting to note what you saw as relatively new. - I like the new (newish) categories at the bottom like VAMs, Toned Coins, Collections, World Coins, I use that often. But I don't think that is the new feature.
Of course getting Phil and the GreatPhotos are awesome too.
I am curious about the ANA Official Auctioneer title you have now. Will there be a whole separate auction for the ANA show sale? I would hope there is some differentiation from the regular collections and GC auctions.

- We're not reporting enough fakes/scams on eBay here. So here is something - I don't know if the seller just stole the GreatCollections and has a *similar* coin to sell, or whether the whole listing is a scam. How do I know they stole our images? We have the coin - and we've had it in our possession since we took the images. If you look at the description, the seller writes the coin is actually raw/uncertified. eBay Seller ferndene57 - please don't steal our pictures. We're not reporting enough fakes/scams on eBay here. - This was one of the special coins we handled in June - the finest graded by 2.5 points. 1875 $20 Gold PCGS MS-66+ CAC. It is the second-finest for a Type II $20. I was unsuccessful in tracking down a pedigree for the coin. It's one of those "freak" coins.
