- DoctorBurnzyThis short Coin World article https://www.coinworld.com/voices/gerald-tebben/half_dollars_a_myst.html mentions there was an auction in 1882 which included an1878s half dollar....also mentions the coin being considered a great rarity in the 1893 A Treatise on the Coinage of the United State Branch Mints. It was known to be rare then. I side with the camp that the coins were shipped overseas and melted. https://www.loc.gov/resource/gdcmassbookdig.treatiseoncoinag00heat/?st=pdf&pdfPage=38 a link to the 1893 Treatise. This short Coin World article https://www.coinworld.com/voices/gerald-tebben/half_dollars_a_myst.html mentions there was an auction in 1882 which included an1878s half dollar....also mentions the coin being considered a great rarity in the 1893 A Treatise on the Coinage of the United State Branch Mints.
