- CollectorInspectorGadget I understand your perspective at the moment. I know how difficult it is for all Americans to make a choice based on two clowns but thankfully, one clown mostly stands for the things my family stands for. The other one doesn't know what she stands for and goes by "whatever the people want" which is dangerous and irresponsible. Please consider that and understand if we don't get out and vote, and we all had that mindset that "my vote doesn't matter" then we are all going to get whatever those in political power want us to get. The system was a lot more broken back in 1860 and the people got out and voted then. Let's not let them down![CollectorInspectorGadget] I understand your perspective at the moment. - Tough call. It's best to look at comps. Did any comps sell for around what you would need if they were graded? Is grading going to increase the value for your collection (or inventory)?
I only send something for grading if the grading will increase the value significantly enough to cover the time I will be without the coin (1 to 3 months) plus the grading fee and shipping.Tough call. - This question came in to the help desk and thought it would be good to discuss here, if you have used restoration services from a grading company can you share your thoughts?
Here is the user question: A couple of months ago after my coin was graded it was mentioned that it might be a good candidate for "Conservation" ? Can you explain what that means, the cost, and the potential added value? This question came in to the help desk and thought it would be good to discuss here, if you have used restoration services from a grading company can you share your thoughts? The ‘26 Peace I sent in was an MS65 coin slathered in PVC residue. It came back with a + grade and looks fantastic. I also sent in a Morgan dollar with minimal PVC residue. That turned out well and I was charged much less for the work. This is the ‘26 Peace before restoration.I had a similar experience as [ToddPollock] after sending two coins to PCGS for restoration. - I've used ANACS conservation because its such a good deal, for the price the other TPG's charge for one coin you can have them do every coin in the submission (up to 20). I had a very dark peace dollar with tab toning on the reverse and adhesive residue. The adhesive was removed, the toning was somewhat lighter. I sent a morgan in that looked like it might be PL but had lacquer or wax or something on it. Whatever it was only cam off in a few spots. Might have looked really good if they just let it soak longer.
The only coin I paid PCGS to conserve I submitted at a show, it took almost a year to get back, and they charged me the full price for conservation even though they didn't do anything to it.
I don't know what chemicals they use. I've heard NGC is the best for high value coins. They have one of those machines like explosive detectors at the airport that puffs air over the coin and runs some chemical analysis to determine the best approach to conservation.I've used ANACS conservation because its such a good deal, for the price the other TPG's charge for one coin you can have them do every coin in the submission (up to 20). - I had 2 pieces "restored" through PCGS. One came back looking as it went in ( a dark obverse silver coin ), however, the reverse look a little sharper ... Grade was returned the same (PF63). Another was also in a PCGS holder 63 and looked like it had some residue on the toned obverse . Came back a little nicer looking without the residue look and it was upgraded to a PF64. I though bother pieces would come back with a much livelier look but they had not. I have no idea what they did as it is a black hole for information feedback ( that was 6 years back and have not needed to try again). As for cost - the upgrade to the 64 made the one piece wroth the wait and cost . the 1st one however I could have done without.I had 2 pieces "restored" through PCGS. - The lighter color on the obverse looks pinkish to me, which is the color copper coins get when they are improperly cleaned, so no real collector value except as an educational example of what cleaned copper coins look like. If you use an iPhone for taking pictures, there is an app called Xircle that does nothing but crop pictures into circular images. The lighter color on the obverse looks pinkish to me, which is the color copper coins get when they are improperly cleaned, so no real collector value except as an educational example of what cleaned copper coins look like. - FLXtreeguy A combination of low value software tools. It would be a whole lot easier if I had Photoshop, but I don't have it at the moment because I don't like Adobe's license agreement.
So I take a screen capture and dump it into some free software called Irfanview. I can then rotate the coin into the proper position with Irfanview. I then dump the new image into PowerPoint in order to remove the background. Yes, PowerPoint. I know that's a strange choice. But it allows you to remove the background of an image. It's not a very sophisticated process. But it works.[FLXtreeguy] A combination of low value software tools.
