- TerrysTonersI can't deny the total coolness of that Judd-12 myself, either. But for sheer eye appeal, that 1795 Flowing Hair dollar in MS66, B-7, BB-18, leaves me drooling. The whole back story of Catherine Bullowa and her late husband David, a respected mid-20th-century numismatist, just adds to the allure. I was fortunate enough to meet her at some show many years ago. She was a real character. I also like that the 1795 dollar is not the most common variety for the year, which by a country mile is the B-5, BB-27 showing a small straight bar of metal in the left obverse field behind the hair. While this B-7, BB-18 variety is not rare, it is hard to find in higher grades and it is the only die marriage for the year showing 14 berries on the reverse (7 on each side), yet there are some notable high-grade survivors of the die pairing besides this one, namely the Lord St. Oswald Uncirculated example which proves that this die pairing was indeed struck in 1795. Catherine Bullowa bought this coin raw for $25,000 in the 1960s and sold it at a small Pennsylvania auction many years later—still raw—for $1,265,000. - RyanGmessydesk That coin is like out of this world cool. It must have been a large team grading it. How do you grade a coin like that? There literally is one other example. It's basically unique. - messydeskRyanG I imagine there's a bit more discussion and hullaballoo when something like that gets graded, and everyone gets to see it. If you were look at all 5 not knowing anything about the coins of the early mint, this one would stand out as a far superior execution of a Liberty head design than the others. Tragic that Joseph Wright died before being able serve as engraver.[RyanG] I imagine there's a bit more discussion and hullaballoo when something like that gets graded, and everyone gets to see it. - RyanGYeah man I was looking at these. That 1798 half eagle is amazing and there are really only three or four of them in public hands. Just today I found out that the Atwater coin is going to be sold at stacks in February, which is amazing because that coin hasn't been in the market of over 50 years. - On a Morgan group on Facebook one of the guys was complaining about the FUN show, he was trying to sell silver and was directed to the king of silver prices. Was offered 10 below and was told it wont go any higher because he knew. Well 20$ an ounce higher it has went. - ToddPollock I think it would be super cool to have competitive classes for people’s specialties, we already have the education mode where you can set it for a certain coin type I think it would be super cool to have a top prize for grading of series, example morgan dollars or seated quarters, obviously the silver eagle prize that has been the standard wouldn’t be practical for more series but I think it would be fun to have more categories even if the prize is just a paper certificate (maybe just the more popular series like Lincoln cents Morgan’s cause with those the issue of not enough coins per category likley wouldn’t be an issue)[ToddPollock] I think it would be super cool to have competitive classes for people’s specialties, we already have the education mode where you can set it for a certain coin type I think it would be super cool to have a top prize for grading of series, example morgan dollars or seated quarters, obviously the silver eagle prize that has been the standard wouldn’t be practical for more series but I think it would be fun to have more categories even if the prize is just a paper certificate (maybe just the more popular series like Lincoln cents Morgan’s cause with those the issue of not enough coins per category likley wouldn’t be an issue)

- With the run in silver bringing physical silver buyers into stores, what will this do to numismatic coins? Is there a silver price that is bad for coin collecting? There has to be a silver price point that may cause some collectors to leave. I look at MS63 and MS 64 Morgans, with wholesale bids in the mid 60’s and 70’s when silver gets up to 80 MS63’s are in the melt range. 90% at 50-55x face can even make some album collectors gun shy.
I hate to see new people to the hobby (if we can call the people with silver FOMO right now part of the hobby) potentially exposing themselves to getting burned. Hopefully they dont but will they join the actual hobby? Some of those that panic bought when covid hit are now doing well, if they held.

- Zach150 I was thinking that copper, nickel coins wont be hurt by the run and may benefit from people looking to collect something with a cheaper entry point. Silver dollar and halves may be the ones with a big impact.[Zach150] I was thinking that copper, nickel coins wont be hurt by the run and may benefit from people looking to collect something with a cheaper entry point. - Great question. I think this is a good thing for the hobby. Forget MAGA, let's Make Morgans Rare Again! An 1884 O will never be actually "rare" but this will increase the value of the coin overall of all those common date coins, bringing up the value of the not so common coins..
However, if it gets "too" high, it could price people out of the hobby. Not many collectors have thousands or even hundreds to spend on one coin and when silver climbs into the 100s, where will you find a 1884 O Morgan type coin for $60?
Overall, it's good for the hobby. The attention and attendance at shows is record high and I see a lot of new faces. Many will fade away, some will stay, but naturally it has brought more people in. They may start as silver stackers, but a few will end as numismatists.Great question. I think this is a good thing for the hobby. Forget MAGA, let's Make Morgans Rare Again!
