Sold at the Philippine Exhibit held as part of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
History of the 1904 One Peso
"The total issue of Philippine silver coins made at Philadelphia in 1904 was 11,355 sets. None of these were struck specifically for circulation.
Sold at the mint throughout the year was a total of 1,355 sets. These were struck on order and were regular Proof issues. Another 10,000 sets were officially ordered by Farran Zerbe (widely known numismatist, later a president of the American Numismatic Association) to be placed for sale at the Philippine Exhibit held as part of the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis during 1904. The first striking of his order for 10,000 set may have been proof like in quantity and appearance, but the majority of them were struck as Uncirculated coins. Of the 10,000 sets delivered for sale at St. Louis, there remained unsold 6,746 sets. There were sent to the Philippine Treasury in Manila where another 500 sets were sold; the rest were placed in circulation as ordinary coins".

  • Sea salvaged Philippine peso

“Early in 1942, 15,700,000 Peso pieces were crated and dumped into the sea near Corregidor to avoid capture by the Japanese. This measure was largely successful, as the Japanese did not succeed in raising many pieces. After the war, from 1945 to 1948 under supervision of the Bureau of the Treasury, 9,000,000 Pesos were retrieved. Still later, under supervision of the Central Bank of the Philippines, another 1,300,000 Pesos were salvaged. By 1958, the total of Pesos not yet found was about five million pieces.”
"A great majority of the salvaged "War Pesos" will show some signs of their prolonged salt-water submersion. Most often found on the coins is a dark corrosive substance very resistant to any type of cleaning."

What makes Copper coins turn black?

Usually copper turns black because it forms copper sulfide. This is produced when hydrogen sulfide (bad egg gas) or a solution of it comes into contact with the copper, especially if it is moist. If you hold a piece of copper long enough it will also turn black, but this is because your perspiration contains sulfur containing molecules that can break down in the moisture to form a solution of hydrogen sulfide, or similar solutions. The sulfur in your perspiration comes from proteins and the food we all eat - it's not just from you!
