About Me
Hello, I have been collecting for a long time, off and on since about 1969. I mainly collect 19th century slabbed circulated type coins but also collect tokens and other exonumia and also enjoy putting together sets of US coins in albums. I’m also very much into vintage coin albums such as Wayte Raymond and similar.

- One more new purchase. The broken die and zigzag marking intrigued me enough that I ended up purchasing it. Not really sure what’s going on there. Almost looks like a clash mark from something resembling an Indian head cent headdress but not really. Anybody have any ideas? One more new purchase. - mrpress62This is what I like about civil war tokens, you can have the same token in different die states, and each is more interesting than the last. - ToddPollock I’m not really sure, but I noticed that another seller of CWT’s has one that has the same thing going on, so it must be a variety. Probably a shattered die. Here’s a picture of the other sellers one. I bid on that one too, thought it might be nice to have two of them, but I decided to just stick with the one I already purchased so I’m letting the one on eBay go to someone else.[ToddPollock] I’m not really sure, but I noticed that another seller of CWT’s has one that has the same thing going on, so it must be a variety. - I also just found this one on eBay that appears to be an earlier die state of the same variety before it totally shattered. This one had a low enough “buy it now” price that I went ahead and purchased it. I also like their presentation in a homemade slab with a stamp, but not sure if the token is somehow related to ShilohI also just found this one on eBay that appears to be an earlier die state of the same variety before it totally shattered. - How does it look in hand? Usually the copper nickel strikes display a kind of pinkish off white color. This one looks almost white metal or german silver in the photos. I also dont think that the circulating Indian Cents of that composition were "planed down" as that seller stated. - Don't see many copper nickel compositions, mostly brass, tin, and lead as "other" or "white metal" tokens. Obviously the die broke and likely due to how harder that metal is. Would be interesting to get an XRF analysis done on it, to see what the metal used really is. - Mr_Spud I can't guarantee that it broke, (I should have said it is close to breaking), from the die cracks it sure looks close to failing, I can't imagine it would last much longer with all the die cracks on the reverse in a pattern like that. I wonder if there are other tokens of the same variety showing any cuds from missing chunks on the reverse?[Mr_Spud] I can't guarantee that it broke, (I should have said it is close to breaking), from the die cracks it sure looks close to failing, I can't imagine it would last much longer with all the die cracks on the reverse in a pattern like that. - Gumby After looking at it in the large size I think you are right and I'm seeing things. I thought the globe the eagle is standing on were die cracks. - I wonder if coins where a high percent of guessers guess a grade higher than the grade on the slab are ones with a higher probability of upgrading. Not necessarily to upgrade them, but more like for marketing purposes. For example, if you could state in an auction description that the coin scored a higher grade on a certain percent of the time and it could be verified like a cert lookup if the owner wants it to be public knowledge.I wonder if coins where a high percent of guessers guess a grade higher than the grade on the slab are ones with a higher probability of upgrading. - it presents an opportunity for GreatCollections, they could put the grading distribution from Guess The Grade on the auction page for a coin if it indicates its undergraded, and they could put a link to the coin on Guess The Grade if the coin is up for sale to advertise.it presents an opportunity for GreatCollections, they could put the grading distribution from Guess The Grade on the auction page for a coin if it indicates its undergraded, and they could put a link to the coin on Guess The Grade if the coin is up for sale to advertise.
