  • I followed up with eBay yesterday trying to help the community so to speak. The 1st rep I got that was probably from India ticked me off so bad with her poor English and stand-off practices that I hung up the phone on her for the 1st time ever on an eBay Rep! The 2nd lady had to be an upper level supervisor. She was very nice and I finally got a straight answer about seller protection. The only thing it technically covers in a charge back situation is the charge back fee. It does not cover the cost of the item. Obviously some are covered as good will gestures. I expressed to her that eBay needs to clarify this in their terms as pretty much everyone I know believes the item is covered. For sellers worried about this I suggest you contact your local law enforcement to be sure they will prosecute these situations. I asked her to suggest to whoever needs to be told to direct some of their lobbying funds towards changing the antiquated laws regarding charge backs.

We went on to discuss a few other things, 1 of which is a pet peeve of mine. I asked her if she remembered when eBay lobbied hard for Net Neutrality. She did! I said would you agree that eBay is one of the biggest hypocrites now since the only way to get a fair shake at visibility is paying advertising fees. She laughed and agreed with me.

Overall it's probably one of the best conversations I've had with eBay!

  • Resolved! The buyer has paid and raised many questions about the payment system! Here is his message to me through eBay after leaving a message on my answering machine.

PayPal said they filed a claim against my credit card company. My credit card company said
they filed a claim against PayPal, and Ebay was absolutely useless. Anyway I finally saw, with my own 2 eyes, that
my credit card company credited my account for $318.75. It took me a while to figure out, that it was YOUR
coins $318.75. The worst part of this nightmare was that I DID NOT FILE A CLAIM with anybody. That is why at first
when I communicated with you, I was saying "what the heck is this guy talking about." I am glad this most fruitless
situation is finally coming to a rightful END. Please email me stating that if I, which I am going to, PayPal you $318.75,
the issue over non-payment for the 1904-S, Barber Half Dollar, PCGS, VG10, is OVER, and you will be dropping all claims
of non-payment against me, on any venue that you complained to about, in regards to this situation. Please compose this message, through this venue tonight, and I WILL pay you, using your official, Ebay, PayPal, email address TONIGHT.

  • If you guys want some entertainment go read some of the thousands of complaints on the BBB about eBay. I'm going to draft a letter to my State Attorney General about how eBay is fraudulently advertising their seller protection.

  • Well, I joined twitter last night. Geeze, worst Captcha experience I have ever had....took many, many tries. I posted on the main eBay page with no response yet. Same ole, Same ole with eBay news. Here are the DM's I exchanged with them:

Are eBay sellers aware seller protection does not cover them if a buyer does a charge back?

Thanks for messaging eBay. We will never ask for any personally identifiable or payment-related information.
If you would like to file a complaint regarding eBay policies, products or services, please go to https://ebay.com/help/home?from=message&domain=social
For any other matter, we are happy to help and will be with you shortly.

I have already tried to resolve this on the phone. Many sellers I know are cautiously awaiting the outcome of eBay helping a buyer steal from me!

    Payment dispute seller protections
Hi, and thanks for your DM. Please keep in mind that when a buyer opens a dispute with their payment institution (for example, their credit card provider or PayPal), the payment institution will inform eBay of the dispute and initiate a process to resolve the dispute with the buyer.

The final outcome of the dispute is decided by the payment institution and we would not have control over that. If the payment institution determines that the buyer is owed a refund, eBay will refund the buyer and will then seek reimbursement from the seller for the refunded amount. However, the seller may be eligible for payment dispute seller protections by eBay. Please take a look into this guide http://spkl.io/60174SQk5 for details on how these protections work and if you need further support, you will be able to contact from that page so you can speak with our specialized team Hope this clarifies, we wilsh you a good day ahead! ~Alvaro

I have exhausted the route on the phone with eBay. Here is the timeline of the dispute. Seller purchased, left positive feedback, several weeks later did a charge back for item not as described. The buyer has not contacted me and will not respond to messages. The coin has not been returned. This is a Certified Coin that was accurately pictured. Seller Protection is useless and frankly this is the only situation where I feel it would have any value. I have suspended sales in my store until I am confident this can not happen again. I had over $650,000 in listings BTW.

    Payment dispute seller protections
I cam sorry to hear that, and believe me if I could do more for you, I would certainly do. Unfortunately, as explained, we do not have the ability to review payment disputes here. We would certainly love to see you keep selling your items in our site with no issues as you did for this long time. Most of buyers are honest and we have as mentioned seller protections, but being a dispute filled with a financial institution, we would not have control over the outcome or the ability to fence the buyer to return the item. If you wish to submit anew appeal or get more information about this, we'd need you to contact our specialized team from the page provided http://spkl.io/60134SvT3 Thanks for your understanding, and apologies for any inconvenience~Alvaro

Myself and many other sellers I know are under the impression this is what seller protection is for. Many may follow my lead if eBay allows this person to steal from me. I would like you to tell me other situations where seller protection covers a seller.

  • eBay's playing nasty! I called again and pushed a bit and showed them I had suspended sales in my store. I just received this email:

    Hello amwldcoin,
We wanted to let you know that your payouts have been placed on a temporary hold. This may have happened for a variety of reasons—to learn more, you can check out our Payments on hold page.

We understand it’s important you receive your money quickly so we’re reviewing and verifying some of your account information and will get back to you as soon as possible.

Here’s what you need to know

You can still list and sell items on eBay as usual
The review process may take up to 5 business days. During our review, you’ll see a banner under your account’s Payments tab indicating a payout hold
The banner will be removed once your payout hold is released, and your payouts will resume based on your regular schedule
For more information about our terms and policies on payout holds, please take a look at our eBay User Agreement and Payments Terms of Use.

We’ll reach out to you if we have any follow-up questions and if you have any questions or concerns, please get in touch. We’re here to help.

We’re glad you're part of our community.

    Thanks,
    eBay

25 years on eBay and it's another 1st. I think I will look into opening a twitter(X) account tomorrow!

  • Here are some answers.

1st the buyers eBay username is westiepoo

eBay finally told me why it is not eligible for Seller Protection. Basically if a bank allows a charge back and takes the money from eBay, eBay takes the money from you. I was finally able to get the transaction information. It was done through Paypal.

So! I called Paypal. I pressed very hard. I was told their hands are tied when a banking institution does a chargeback against Paypal. I pressed for the bank info. Bottom line, the only way Paypal will provide that information is if they receive a subpeona.

I would like to spearhead a class action lawsuit if there are enough people with the same problem who are willing to join. This could become a major problem if it isn't already.

  • I was surprised there is not a group to address selling. Here is my 1st contribution:

    eBay Seller PSA

I don't know if it is allowed to warn folks here about problems on eBay. If it's not allowed please delete.

I have been an eBay seller for 25 years and just had a 1st.

I sold a PCGS graded coin to a person who will remain nameless for the moment, unless Ian approves outing him. I received positive feedback from him "Very Nice Coin". Then weeks later out of the blue with no communication filed a CC chargeback under item not as described.

I jumped through all the hoops eBay required. Well, after almost 2 months I received the outcome yesterday. The CC ruled in the buyers favor even though he has made no attempt to return the coin.

What about eBay seller protection you ask? Nope, took the money back from me including all the fees and then charged me $20 on top of that! Well I have been able to have the $20 fee reversed, ha ha! The funniest part was when the Chargeback was filed an eBay rep told me it was a cut and dry that Seller Protection would cover me since there was no resolution attempted through eBay.

I am seriously considering retiring at this point. eBay can kiss the fees I earn them goodbye going forward if I do. I have earned them a pretty hefty amount on millions of dollars in sales over the years!
