- Today is my first official day taking on the role as executive director at the PNG. Nothing changes about my role as President/CEO at CDN Publishing. I'm excited to breathe new energy and perspective into this great organization. If you are a dealer, I hope you will consider joining this prestigious organization. All PNG dealers must adhere to a strict standard of professionalism, which is no barrier for any respectable dealer. Drop me a message if you want to discuss, or come see me at our booth at ANA!Today is my first official day taking on the role as executive director at the PNG. - Here's a classic pic I shot when we first took over the Greysheet from the Downing family in August 2015. This photo shows me holding one of the first copies of the Greysheet being printed at a Norfolk, VA facility. We've come a long way in a short time merging many of the confusing Greysheet publications into a single full-color monthly. Here's a classic pic I shot when we first took over the Greysheet from the Downing family in August 2015. - Based on my news feed, it looks like a Bust half weekend on MyCollect. I love this series but I've never collected them personally. If I did this would be my favorite coin -- the rare 1817/4. I believe it is now in PCGS AU53 holder, though I sold it in November 2004 as PCGS AU50. The coin is gorgeous with rainbow colors that would command a premium for a common date. Anyway, it came to me via a last-minute consignment to our Richmond I Auction in NYC. A gentleman named Juan Suros, who was already well known in numismatic circles, called out of the blue to our office to say he had a handful of Bust halves to consign if I would fly out to Coronado and pick them up. As fate would have it, I was already booked to take my family to San Diego for a vacation so I left the crew in Sea World and took a cab to a bank on Coronado and met Mr. Suros for less than an hour. He handed me the coins and the rest is history. I walked about Sea World for the rest of the day with his coins in my pocket. You can find some pedigree info here: https://www.pcgs.com/coinfacts/coin/1817-4-50c/6112 (Image courtesy of PCGS CoinFacts.)Based on my news feed, it looks like a Bust half weekend on MyCollect. - "If I did this would be my favorite coin -- the rare 1817/4." Well, yeah! Unless you are going to include the Draped Bust, Small Eagle halves. Now that would be a different discussion!"If I did this would be my favorite coin -- the rare 1817/4." Well, yeah! Unless you are going to include the Draped Bust, Small Eagle halves. - actually, I was specifically referring to capped bust halves. However, if I had to choose from 1794-1836, I'd still go with the 1817/4 first, and the 1794 second. Maybe an 1839-O in third place. - johnf I knew that ... that you meant Capped Bust ... and I don't disagree with you. I'd choose the Suros 1817/4 myself! But, for your third place, don't you mean the 1838-O? And, if I had to choose any Bust half, Capped or Draped, I'd probably go with this one. The 1796 16 Stars, MS66 PCGS. I like it a touch more in terms of strike (but less in color) than the 1797 MS66 on CoinFacts, which shows some strike softness. Anyway, all pipe dreams for me! - The truth is I was not especially nervous. In those days I was traveling with rare coins to shows, or to drop off with clients, and the most comfort was having them in my pocket knowing I was completely anonymous. Now that I'm retired from dealing and traveling with coins I still regularly wake up with nightmares that I left a bag of coins on a plane or at behind at a show. I definitely don't miss that sort of stress. The truth is I was not especially nervous.
