About Me
I've been collecting coins for over 35 years. I have always been attracted to the tangible history they represent. My interests generally center these days around interesting tokens and medals, and more specifically the work of Civil War diesinker, Joseph H. Merriam of Boston. (A book is coming!)
I am also actively collecting and selling United States Military tokens, another fascinating niche of the hobby.
Please send me a message if you're looking for anything particular. I am a part time dealer of all sorts of exonumia.

- Super quiet around here, yet we have 110 members now!
What do you guys think about spicing things up with some offerings for sale? I dont want the group to turn into the many MyCollect groups where it's dealers pushing their wares everyday, but maybe we could pick a day like Sundays to post available CWTs or want lists? - This is a bronze medal struck to commemorate the heroic action of George T. Robinson in thwarting the attack on Secretary of State William Seward. This was all a part of the larger conspiracy to assassinate President Lincoln, Vice President Johnson, and Seward. As he lay recovering from illness, Seward was attacked by one of John Wilkes Booth's conspirators, Lewis Powell, who had already stabbed his son. The medal depicts a dramatic knife fight. This sold at Stacks last month, unfortunately not to me.This is a bronze medal struck to commemorate the heroic action of George T. - D. Skidmore's Hotel, Seneca Falls, NY. This is one underrated Civil War token from New York! Wayyyy harder to find than the famous "Good for a Scent" and nearly as popular with the eagle holding a cigar on its beak. This is the plate coin to Fuld's Storecard book, and it's the reddest example I have ever seen of this variety. A blazer! From the Steve Tanenbaum CollectionD. Skidmore's Hotel, Seneca Falls, NY. - mrpress62 Yes, I just purchased this out of the recent Stacks auction. And I think it went very reasonably. Like $50 more than it sold for 11 years ago. I already own a beautiful example from the Bowers Collection, but Ive been trying to locate this one from the Tanenbaum Estate for years. - Have you always wanted a Confederate Cent, but were apprehensive about spending 6 figures on a single coin? Stop by the Civil War Token group and see how far your money will really go in historical tokens like this one. It uses the same obverse hub of that legendary coin, was actually used in commerce, and is connected to the death of the first Union officer killed in the Civil War.

Stop by the Civil War Token group and see how far your money will really go in historical tokens like this one. It uses the same obverse hub of that legendary coin, was actually used in commerce, and is connected to the death of the first Union officer killed in the Civil War.This Marshall House token predates the Civil War by 2 years, but is wildly popular. Why? Not only does it use the French Liberty head motif that Robert Lovett, Jr designed for the infamous Confederate Cent, but the Marshall House was the scene of one of the first casualties of the War. On May 24, 1861, Colonel Elmer Ellsworth was killed at the Marshall House in Alexandria, Virginia while removing a Confederate flag there. He was the first Union officer to die in the War. This token would have been used at this establishment during those times.
This example was sold at Stacks recently for the astonishing price of $1320. It is graded PCGS MS63, the only uncirculated example I know of. But is it truly uncirculated?? It is weakly struck for sure, with typical softness on the 9 of the date.
But it seems to these eyes to be a nice AU 58., without the benefit of an in hand observation.0 Comments 0 Shares 742 Views - This Marshall House token predates the Civil War by 2 years, but is wildly popular. New York. 1863 Edward Schaaf. Fuld-630BK-1do. Rarity-7. Copper-Nickel. Plain Edge. Overstruck on an 1858 Large Letters Flying Eagle Cent.
NGC MS 62. Sold for $1560, a bargain for such a dramatic overstrike.

- Also from the Stacks highlight reel, here is a medal by John Adams Bolen for the Pioneer Baseball Club, certified AU58 by PCGS. These iconic medals are on fire, sold for $3,360. Not a civil war token, but very, very cool from the period just before the war.

- StevenFarrell There's always next time. These things have really increased in price over the years, especially after Neil Musante's book on Bolen medals. The reported mintage is around 125 white metal, and 75 copper. But far fewer exist today[StevenFarrell] There's always next time. Blew my ability to rebid on items i wanted badly, had to let them go to others. - The price was really underwhelming on this exciting piece, previously offered to me at $5,000 (Which it is probably worth.) I think the auction house kind of called unnecessary attention to the PVC, which in my opinion was minimal and can be removed easily. The price was really underwhelming on this exciting piece, previously offered to me at $5,000 (Which it is probably worth.) - The undertype is simply amazing. I think this was a bargain at $7200. CWT overstrikes on 25c are the rarest of the rare and will typically run 5 figures when they come up for sale (which is infrequently to say the least.) I have only tracked 5 or 6 varieties on quarters for the entire series! The undertype is simply amazing. I think this was a bargain at $7200. The group is a little slow. I sometimes wonder if its too heavy with posts about super high end coins that are out of reach for many collectors. That might keep those with a new imperfect but interesting $25 find at a local coin shop from posting.
