About This Group
This group is for discussion on tokens used by our servicemen and women on military installations throughout the world. Starting with the Sutler wagons of the American Civil War, the need for small change in conducting transactions both domestically and abroad necessitated the use of tokens to make small change. The post traders followed and were in turn succeeded by canteens and post exchanges. These metal tokens lasted through the Vietnam War and into the 1980s until they were ultimately replaced by plastic discs and cardboard "pogs" in our conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. This is a place to preserve that numismatic history of our great military.

- This one was used by our servicemen in Vietnam in one of the clubs during their downtime. I love the design, and it is quite colorful in hand.
According to Ray Bows, who wrote a great book on the subject of Vietnam War tokens, this club opened in Feb 1962 at Tan Son Nhut Air base and was closed by 1964. So, very early in the conflict. It was named after the Shawnee helicopters of the 8th and 57th Transportation Companies. This one was used by our servicemen in Vietnam in one of the clubs during their downtime. - Ft Moultrie, SC. Post Exchange. Good For 25c in Trade. This is a less frequently encountered denomination from a tough fort. Has been harshly cleaned unfortunately, but most of these tokens have one issue or another. What can you do when you collect for the history?Ft Moultrie, SC. Post Exchange. Good For 25c in Trade. - Anybody out there?
Here is one from Ft Ethan Allen in Vermont. I've always assumed it was good for a glass of beer as it uses the Anheuser-Busch logo on the reverse.Anybody out there? - Post Exchange, Alcatraz Island, Cal. Good for 50c in Merchandise
One of the highlights to my collection! This one is from Alcatraz when it was a military instalation, before it became the famous federal penitentiary. These are pretty rare.
When they are encountered, they're often scratched, bent, dented, and/ or corroded from spending years in the San Francisco Bay. This one is a happy exception.Post Exchange, Alcatraz Island, Cal. - Here is one our Vietnam veterans (like my dad) may remember: 39th Signal Brigade, 5c. One of the infrequent tokens of this era that actually has the date on it (1963) and the word "VIETNAM." Tan Son Nhut was a major air base used by all the services during the Vietnam War. This token predates the Tet Offensive by 5 years. Here is one our Vietnam veterans (like my dad) may remember: 39th Signal Brigade, 5c.
