The 1808 Large Cap Quarter Eagle is a one year type coin, with only 2,710 pieces minted. There are 64 total pieces certified by PCGS and NGC (only 11 that are CAC approved), meaning that roughly 4% of the entire mintage survived over the past 200 years. The price of gold rose in the international market, the gold value now was more than the coin's face value. Most of these early U.S. gold coins were melted for their bullion value or exported to Europe.
