1936-1942 Proofs | MyCollect

Good day everyone.

I make this post as part of getting active in My Collect. For 1936-1942 proof coinage as an area to collect in, prior to early June I had a PSGS Registry set containing proof sets for 1939-1942. Since early June I have found at local shows and on EBay proof sets for 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1942 that contain some gorgeous coins. I acquired these raw sets and have submitted the coins in them for grading. I will add the 1937 and 1938 sets to my Registry Set, leaving me only with the 1936 to acquire. Coins in the 1939 and 1942 sets will likely upgrade some of the coins in my current 1939 and 1942 sets. The 1937, 1938 and 1939 nickels are toned with multiple colors. The 1937, 1938 and 1939 cents are likely full RD. The 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1942 halves have frosted devices and mirrored fields, giving them a Cameo look (the 1942 half graded PF65, no CAM). Surprisingly, the 1942 quarter has lightly frosted obverse devices and moderately frosted reverse devices. These coins will likely be graded and returned to me in October and November.

Currently at auction at GreatCollections.com as part of the Terry's Toners Collection, this 1936 Satin Proof-63 Brown cent was formerly in the collection of John Whitney Walter (who also sometimes just went by the name John Whitney), who is widely known as "Mr. 1796." Of course the year 1796 was among the most significant in early Mint history, and it offers more than its fair share of elusive issues and first-year coins, such as the 1796 half dollars (two varieties), the 1796 No Pole and With Pole half cents, the 1796 No Stars and With Stars gold quarter eagles, and many others. John Whitney Walter's incredible collection of top-grade 1796 coinage was auctioned at Stack's in May 1999.

I am slowwwwwwwly building a 1937 proof set missing the dime and quarter. That said, I am pleased with the 3 others and want to be careful with maintaining what I perceive to be the quality level. First up is the half in OGH 65 with gold sticker.

I guess I have learn the ropes. You can't do paragraphs here. Here are two of my favorite 1936 Proof coins, a Satin Finish nickel and the half dollar. And it seems that you can only post one picture per message. This site seems to be quite restrictive, which will make it hard to post here. You can't say much with no paragraphs and only one picture. Sorry.

I must say that this seems to be a high level group. I put together a set of the 1936 to 42 Proof sets, with all of the coins certified by NGC or PCGS. It's more of a "collector grade set" which ranges from PR-64 to 67 with no cameo coins.

I saw it and decided not to get involved. One lot had boxes from the 1950 to '54 era that had no dates marked on them. The minimum bid was so high, that the sets had be 1950 or 1951 coins to be financially feasible, unless you got very lucky and find a ultra cameo Proof coin.
