- This is a super early sample of the GS-15 holder. This was given specifically to members of the BoD and a few other internal folks. Notice how there is no texture on the holder and no PCGS logo on the holder? Also, the hologram was just a foil hot-stamp with no branding. The population of these is less than 20.This is a super early sample of the GS-15 holder. This was given specifically to members of the BoD and a few other internal folks. - So I would often buy (with my own money!) bullion coins and just put them into test holders. I don’t specifically remember the story behind this, but it is a pre-GS15 holder welded with an NGC label! So I would often buy (with my own money!) bullion coins and just put them into test holders. - SilverAge3 The label matches the coin, so I'm assuming I did crack it out and put it into the PCGS holder. It might have been testing a new gasket resin or something, and for reference (to compare against other test subjects) I kept in the NGC label. Normally when we would do testing we wouldn't put in labels, we'd just write in sharpie on the holder. But if there already was a label, it's possible I used that instead. Then we'd have spreadsheets to keep track of test coins/holders over time (as we subjected them to immersion, environmental chambers, etc.). There's actually a ton of testing that goes into holders and gaskets that most people don't realize.[SilverAge3] The label matches the coin, so I'm assuming I did crack it out and put it into the PCGS holder. - These are cards, but there are test/samples of those too! When Pokémon released metallic cards, the first ones we saw were poorly manufactured and the paint was chipping off in the original Pokémon packaging. We wanted to try and figure out how to holder these and I graciously offered the use of my own personal cards for holder testing. I’m not 100% what the final solution was (as this was around the time I left), but here are my personal cards. These are cards, but there are test/samples of those too! - So this isn’t a prototype slab or anything, but this label was used on a bunch of different coins that were given to visitors of the Santa Ana, CA office. There are probably about 10-12 different coins that we would use this label for - almost always 1oz silver bullion. My guess is that the total population of coins with this label is probably about 200, and like I said, that is spread over 10-12 different coin types/dates. Has anyone ever seen one of these in the wild?So this isn’t a prototype slab or anything, but this label was used on a bunch of different coins that were given to visitors of the Santa Ana, CA office. - Hi Folks - so I worked at PCGS for 20 years and was responsible for coin holder development (amongst other things). Throughout the years we created a bunch of sample/prototype slabs that we would often give away to office visitors, VIPs, etc. Is there interest in the community to see these?Hi Folks - so I worked at PCGS for 20 years and was responsible for coin holder development (amongst other things). - Okay... I've got all of the stuff packed up in my garage but I'll pull it out and start posting here. I think some of the most interesting are the gasket designs that we never implemented. It doesn't sound very interesting but some of the designs were pretty out there.Okay... I've got all of the stuff packed up in my garage but I'll pull it out and start posting here. - First one of these I've owned. T.J. Holt Company. Only had an obverse picture to go by and with the dot matrix I was thinking it would be Blanchard. Still happy I bought it.0 Comments 0 Shares 1040 Views
