About Me
I’m a software developer who has been collecting off and on since the 1980s. I’ve changed focuses a number of times over the years. For the last several I’ve settled on primarily gold dollars as my area of focus.

- Mr_SpudI didn’t respond. I’ve had cataract surgery and yes, you can see colors more vividly. But for me, I went from being extremely nearsighted to being farsighted after the surgery so now I can’t see hairlines, small hits or other details without magnification that I used to see much more easily without needing magnification. So now my focus has shifted to overall eye appeal and not minor post mint damage like hits and hairlines. So it’s a mixed bag for me. If you aren’t nearsighted there should be only positive benefits in terms of looking at coins.I didn’t respond. I’ve had cataract surgery and yes, you can see colors more vividly. - TurtleCatMr_Spud I’m currently in between (second surgery on Monday) so I’m in limbo and won’t vote on my own poll yet. I’ve also been a lifetime nearsighted person who will now be farsighted. I’m curious how it will impact my interest in gold dollars.[Mr_Spud] I’m currently in between (second surgery on Monday) so I’m in limbo and won’t vote on my own poll yet. - Mr_SpudTurtleCat I still like and enjoy looking at my small coins, including gold dollars. Only now they all look to be a higher grade than they used to and I have to use magnification to look for small details and hairlines[TurtleCat] I still like and enjoy looking at my small coins, including gold dollars. - SilverAge3 Very achievable for sure in MS basically. But too bad so few have nice toning. There are some but most seem artificial to me. But a blast white set can still be cool.[SilverAge3] Very achievable for sure in MS basically. But too bad so few have nice toning. There are some but most seem artificial to me. - StevenFarrell I’ve done it several times. Then I reverse course and get lots of coins again only to churn years later, lol. - DeadCatWaltz For me it’s often about just getting to hold them for a while, maybe take a picture. If I could I would just go to auctions and only look at the cool stuff, lol.[DeadCatWaltz] For me it’s often about just getting to hold them for a while, maybe take a picture. - DeadCatWaltz Sometimes I think that. Other times ownership is a burden. I think that’s the difference between special coins and hole fillers (loosely speaking) and the ability to have something you can look at and not just have in a safe deposit box.[DeadCatWaltz] Sometimes I think that. - Sometimes I wonder if I want to a collect coins or just hold them for a while? Ownership is nice but often it’s seeing them that is more interesting. That said, I’m happy with my raw albums of almost full mercs, jeffs, abes, and washingtons.Sometimes I wonder if I want to a collect coins or just hold them for a while? - Would you trade most of your collection for a single rare coin? It’s thankfully not my dilemma but I’ve pondered that from time to time. - I saw the proposed designs for the sesquiquincentennial coins (cent, 5 cent). I know the answer but I’ll lament anyway: why or why can’t we remove Lincoln and Jefferson from those respective coins and go back to something better like liberty, flying eagles, Native American, shields, SOMETHING? Coins are inherently political and there’s no disputing that but coin designs should not be held hostage by just a few states out of some sense of ownership.I saw the proposed designs for the sesquiquincentennial coins (cent, 5 cent). - ToddPollock That, too. It just feels like that CCAC doesn’t have any positive influence. But then again this isn’t about craftsmanship or even quality anymore. It’s utilitarian with a small nod to tradition.[ToddPollock] That, too. It just feels like that CCAC doesn’t have any positive influence. - No idea how true it is but I heard that the Fairmont collection is a former bank holding in Cuba that was acquired by Stacks Bowers and carefully curated. If there are any more to come out, say a gold dollar set, I may even sell a bunch and ride the wave…No idea how true it is but I heard that the Fairmont collection is a former bank holding in Cuba that was acquired by Stacks Bowers and carefully curated. - 7 inches of snow today. Now I wish I had a cool coin with a snow scene on it. Or maybe a more realistic one of a person shoveling snow from their driveway.7 inches of snow today. - Been thinking about it some. I really enjoy coins, their history, the art, etc. But is it my *passion*? I’m thinking it isn’t. It’s an interest, a lifelong interest, but I don’t obsess about it as I do other things. It’s interesting to realize it now. I’m not quite near retirement but it’s only a decade or so away. Do I spend more time on things I’m interested in or passionate about?Been thinking about it some. I really enjoy coins, their history, the art, etc. But is it my *passion*? I’m thinking it isn’t.
