- Often, 53 is an unfavored grade. But this is a coin I'd be proud to own. Question though: what's going on in the surface of the coin from about 8k to 12k (obverse), also evident from 12k to 4k (reverse)? It looks like elephant skin, or sun-baked desert ground! - Bikergeek I asked an expert on this and his exact explanation was this..."This effect is called "plata agria" or sour silver. It's planchet stress marks from the silver not being properly annealed and cracking when rolled to the correct thickness for the planchets".
