- The upgraded coin looks circulated. It is not worthless, its value is about $11. Buy a loop so you can better see the wear. The upgraded coin looks circulated. It is not worthless, its value is about $11. Buy a loop so you can better see the wear.

- icjames1415 Buy some graded coins in various grades and study them under a strong lamp and a 10× jewelers loupe. People say 5× is what you want for grading, but I don’t see the difference, and 10× is better for variety attribution. So it's a good all around magnifier. Don't get a cheapo one, it'll give you headaches. I swear by this model:
https://magnifying.com.au/products/10x-heavy-duty-magnifier
Buy the same coin in like MS-62,3,4,5, and 66. 1964 or 1965-69 kennedy halves are a good choice, and just study them. Try to notice all the little tiny scratches. Marks are waht hurts the grade most of all. Poor lustre (dull/non-flashy finish) can hold it back too, as well as a poor strike. But it's mostly marks. It takes hundreds of coins and countless hours of looking at them to get the hang of it. You can practice with your pocket change. Just do quarters, and only look at the heads side. Try to find the least marked, flashiest, nicest looking quarter and put it aside. Then try to find a better one, and a better one. You'll eventually develop an eye for quality. You'll see like "this one has three noticable scratches/tick marks, but they're small and in a not so distracting location, whereas this one only has one mark that's a little bigger but in a really noticable location." Stuff like that. Look at the difference between brand new P & D coins. The Ps will often have better lustre and be more flashy. The Ds are all mirrored and don't have much eye appeal very often. All this is way too much to explain in one post. I reccomend checking out on YouTube, PCGS Intro To Grading (video series 101 and 102) there's several really informative videos. Also, use PCGS PhotoGrade to see all the US coins in all sorts of different grades. You can also play Guess the Grade here on MyCollect. But photos only carry you so far. Looking at them in hand is really where you learn.[icjames1415] Buy some graded coins in various grades and study them under a strong lamp and a 10× jewelers loupe. - icjames1415 Oh if you're in the US though, that website may not ship to you because of the ridiculous tariff situation. But that's the only site I know that has that loupe. In the PCGS intro to grading videos, there's one video that talks about loupes. Maybe try buying one of those models they mention.[icjames1415] Oh if you're in the US though, that website may not ship to you because of the ridiculous tariff situation. - Hard to tell if that's toning, or environmental damage/staining. The other one was harshly cleaned, so I'd imagine this would be a higher technical grade. Still likely not high enough to be worth more than the silver value.Hard to tell if that's toning, or environmental damage/staining. - Greetings to everyone! I’m a new member of the group, having joined today after completing my second day. I’m excited to connect with fellow numismatists who share my passion for coins. I’m currently seeking advice and opinions on the potential grade of a 1884-S Morgan coin. I’ve noticed that the coin has a toning issue, and I’m curious about its grade considering the known characteristics of the minting year. That year was known for weaker strikes and a mushy appearance. The previous owner stated that the coin is uncirculated, and I can see the cartwheel on both the obverse and reverse sides. One thing that truly caught my attention is that I can see a very clear reflection of myself when holding the coin in front of me. Even with the heavy toning, I can still see a reflection on both sides of the Morgan. I would greatly appreciate any insights or overall comments you may have on this coin.Greetings to everyone! - I got this coin in hand and then realized the black streak on Liberty’s face is PVC. The cloudy dark area on the reverse it likely also PVC. Is this worth restoring via a dip in acetone or should I return it to the dealer? The coin looks like it could upgrade to a 63 but it’s hard to tell if PVC caused any pitting.I got this coin in hand and then realized the black streak on Liberty’s face is PVC. - I am nervous about restoration services, like PCGS. Always makes me hesitate and to be honest, "Details" is a dirty word, no offense. I would hate to give up a straight grade and get details. - wall79 That’s exactly my plan, most of my coins (75%) are PCGS CAC except for my NGC GSA CC Morgan dollars and I had WAY too much money in those years before PCGS certified GSA’s. In fact it’s why removed most coins and won’t renew. I actually had to send them (PCGS) a picture of a GSA as they didn’t know what they were. And yes I still have the emails exchanged.[wall79] That’s exactly my plan, most of my coins (75%) are PCGS CAC except for my NGC GSA CC Morgan dollars and I had WAY too much money in those years before PCGS certified GSA’s.
