  • Resharing.
    Resharing.
9 years ago PCAG, Inc was formed and our first coin that we sold was indeed an iconic rarity. I had always admired this coin but always from afar. Never in my life did I think that one day I would handle this ultra rarity. The U.S. first produced the Eagle in 1795 and continued through 1804. Thirty-four years later, the United States resumed production of the Ten-dollar gold piece. The design was changed to the liberty head and the type I "covered ear" was born. The covered ear last about a year and a half, through the first part of 1839 then changed again. Records show only 3 proof 1838s were produced, making this one of, if not the rarest proof eagle. While many believe the 1804 Plain 4 proof is the King of Eagles, it was produced in 1834 and 4 coins were minted. The three 1838 proofs reside in the Tyrant Collection (PR65) one in the Smithsonian (PR63 approximately) and this specimen, PR65-CAC. The coin here is the only CAC certified coin, although I am told the Tyrant coin would most likely CAC if ever submitted. We placed this coin to a first time buyer for $2,150,000. Three years later, we were approached by a private collector who wanted it for his collection. In 2018, we parted ways with it for well over $2,500,000. It is valued at $3.5 million today. So a coin that I never thought I would handle, I ended up handling it twice and netting my client a very healthy profit. Private treaty sales really help the buyer as fees are much lower depending on who is your broker. Enjoy the eye candy on this Friday! • Northeast Numismatics Offers:
    1808 $2 1/2 PCGS AU50 CAC.
The 1808 Large Cap Quarter Eagle is a one year type coin, with only 2,710 pieces minted. There are 64 total pieces certified by PCGS and NGC (only 11 that are CAC approved), meaning that roughly 4% of the entire mintage survived over the past 200 years. The price of gold rose in the international market, the gold value now was more than the coin's face value. Most of these early U.S. gold coins were melted for their bullion value or exported to Europe.
