  • It is out of my league, but what is on my mind this morning ia a coin Northeast Numismatic sold today. It is an 1841 Seated Half in NGC 61. I do not pursue uncirculated coins but I just wanted to say kudos! to the collector who was quick enough and smart enough to get that coin. Many people complain that no US coins are actually rare. they should try and get their own 1841 in mint state. James

  • varieties continued. Anyone who is interested in having coins slabbed and having the specific variety added to the slab should take a look at the current populations shown online.
I don't know about all coins but if you are looking at Seated coins the populations are very anemic. There are at best some major (Fortin top 100, WB halves) that are there but there are also many coins with populations in single digits.
I think it may take many years for the actual R values of some coins to actually be determined. Perhaps it is the cost, perhaps a thin collector base or perhaps a lack of acceptable coins. Only time will tell. James

  • Starting today I am going to start posting the coins from one of my sets. I will do my best to explain why I picked this specific coin and talk about the coin in general. I will try and post a new coin every day but can't promise that. i hope somebody else out there in the universe will adopt the same idea. If you do, please put a # so I know what number coin it is in your set. i have decided to start with my Seated Dimes. I will post later this morning. James

  • Varieties continued. The obvious way to have a variety identified is to have the chosen service ie: PCGS, NGC, ANAC ICG, put it on the holder.
The biggest drawback to this seems to be the cost. I have only done it once and it ended up costing about $75 dollars thru PCGS.
There are 2 major advantages though. 1 your coin becomes part of an online population. 2 the identification is front and center part of the coins description. I think there are some who may only count coins identified thusly. James
