I’m posting for a friend who is planning to attend the YN Summer Seminar this year. He’s already heard great things about the program and is excited about going, but we were hoping to get some additional feedback from those who have attended.

For those who’ve participated, what stood out most to you? Were there particular sessions, speakers, or activities that you found especially valuable? Any tips for getting the most out of the experience? Also, is there anything you wish you had known beforehand?

He’s looking forward to it and wants to be as prepared as possible. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Tell him to watch out for those YN's, they're sharks!! Various courses and mini- seminars give away sample slabs, and those seem to be a serious currency amongst the yn group. Try to snag extras.

I attended last year and I will also be attending this year. The big auction at the end was very fun because I helped organize a little bit and I helped with the lot viewing. The main course I took was U.S. Coin Grading part 1. It was a very fun and educational course. The first day focused on a variety of coin grading terminology. After that we learned more key aspects of coin grading eg. prime focal points. We also got to grade many rare and interesting coins in hand as well. I also took two mini seminars called U.S. Pattern Coins and U.S. Error Coins. It was a very good experience overall. Also made a few friends while I was there, but I stay off campus.

It's a total 24/7 immersion into coins and numismatics, as Todd states, just go and enjoy! Something to remember though, is Colorado Springs is at a much higher altitude than many people are used to. It's very easy to get dizzy and light headed. Drink a lot of water, in fact I'd recommend carrying water bottle with you to class and wherever you go. Way less oxygen there than most folks are used to, I grew up in Denver and the mountains, then a couple decades of living near sea level I went back for a week of Summer Seminars and really felt it forgetting I wasn't used to it any longer. Stay hydrated!

As we were going up by pikes peak, I started to feel it, then by the time we got to Cripple Creek I was a mess. Drink your water!!! It was great fun, after I sat in a restaurant for a while and just rested and drank.

  westcoin The altitude and the dry air can be pretty tough to handle. Aside from my interest in numismatics, I am also a long distance runner. I ran almost every day while I was there, and I found it significantly harder to hit the paces I was aiming for.

I taught at a couple summer seminars. The classes are great and you will really learn in the areas of your classes but outside you class is where it all happens. You spend time just hanging out with so many coin people and building so many relationships. All meals are with coin people and the evenings you can find gatherings of coin people hanging out. It is a great experience for those who have the time to go.
