Can’t believe this got XF-40, it has way more wear than the example of an XF-40 on coinfacts, the eagles feathers are so flat on the reverse and liberty isnt bold and clear

  RyanG I was always told to differentiate wear vs weak strike was that weak strike appeared as more rounded where wear give the appearance of more flattened, is there another consideration?

  Zach150 Good question. Some areas, like the leaf stems, are very hard to see, yet on a fully struck coin, even in XF, would still be visible because they are not high points. There are several points on this coin that are not high points that are not fully struck. Also, the US Mint used up dies till they broke. I'm not an expert on die states of a 1839 D Quarter Eagle so I can't tell you what the die state is but it does appear to me that it was a LDS as well as a light strike.

Agreed, this should've gotten a slightly lower grade. The weakness in the eagle's feathers and shield I think can be attributed to strike rather than wear, though. Plus, for a 40 it should've had a touch of luster left. The '39-D is a tough, tough date though, so I think that'd be part of the reason they went easy on this coin.

  YN_Evan2010 I can’t see it past a vf25, the obverse is better then the reverse, I just looked at CoinFacts pics and the reverse feathers look more worn than the F-15 example, where the obverse is similar to the Vf-25 just with a little more disturbance to liberty than their example 25
