The 1927-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is the rarest 20th century regular-issue United States coin in any denomination. Although 180,000 were minted, almost all were subsequently melted, except a handful that were released into circulation, likely through over-the-counter exchanges at the Denver Mint window. Today, less than a dozen examples are known in all grades, including those permanently ensconced in museum collections.
