1879 50C Morgan Half Dollar

Rarity: Low R.7, PR64 BN NGC.

Struck in copper with a reeded edge

Obverse:
The Morgan obverse designis a used on the dollar but sized for the 50C plancet.

Reverse:
An eagle with raised wings on the reverse. The eagle holds an olive sprig in its right talon and three arrows in its left. The Motto IN GOD WE TRUST arches underneath the eagle and above the denomination HALF DOLLAR.

Comment:
Uspatterns.com’s Saul Teichman identified about of 15 pieces, but likely several are possible duplicaties.

Both sides display portions of the initial peach-gold color, though a majority of the pattern is deep lavender-brown and forest-green. The strike is shy of complete on the hair above the ear. A diagonal field line near the nose allows identification in auction appearances.
