- Tonight at GC one of the pop 11/0 1972 Eisenhower Dollar Type 2 PCGS MS-66 came up for auction. With a PG of $10,500 last time I check, this specimen sold tonight for around $13,000 including BP. Certainly an impressive figure on this key to the MS Ike series, especially without a CAC sticker. I own 3/11 MS66 coins (-1- CAC and -2- non CAC) in my #1 Registry set for MS & Proof Ikes including major varieties. So, that leaves just 8 remaining coins for the rest of the collecting community. Obviously, Mr Hansen owns one or two of those 8 as well, so there are really about only 6 available pop top MS66 coins excluding my collection and Mr. Hansen’s collection(s). Tonight one of those 6 available pieces came up for auction and greatly outperformed full PG! - A warm welcome to all the new members of this very exciting group! One of the first things to decide in formulating the Top 100 U.S. Modern Coin Set is should coins from the year 1964 be included in the set? Or should the set begin with coins dated 1965? If 1965 is chosen, a half-dozen amazing coins (worth an estimated $150,000+) including the (5) different SMS coins and the Accented Hair Kennedy 50C “don’t make the cut”. Not to mention the (very likely) illegal to own 1964-D Peace Dollar, which was the #1 coin in PCGS’ first Top 100 Modern Coin registry set (and should never have been in my opinion as one of the 4 top PCGS modern coin experts who formulated each and every coin that went into that first PCGS set. Modern coins should be considered only coins from 1965 to present.1965 – The removal of silver from most of our circulating coins was a huge event, resulting in most pre-1965 dimes, quarters and halves being removed from circulation by collectors. - I say 65. The only reason they include 64 is because of the so called 64 SMS coins which are subject to debate as to whether theyvarevor not.I say 65. The only reason they include 64 is because of the so called 64 SMS coins which are subject to debate as to whether theyvarevor not.

Any other members have an opinion on the starting year for the set? 1964 vs. 1965?
Any other members have an opinion on the starting year for the set? 1964 vs. 1965? - It is by no means my area of specialty but I would vote 1965 (after the silver dime, quarter and half largely came to an end).It is by no means my area of specialty but I would vote 1965 (after the silver dime, quarter and half largely came to an end).

- In my humble opinion, here is the #1 rarest (UNIQUE) and most valuable “Top 100 United States Modern Coin”. This Unique Proof 1976 No S Silver Eisenhower Dollar is also the only Proof Silver Dollar for our country’s Bicentennial year that has the Ty 2 Reverse. The other roughly 4,000,000 Proof Silver Ikes struck for our Bicentennial are all Ty 1 Reverse Ike Dollars. In my humble opinion, here is the #1 rarest (UNIQUE) and most valuable “Top 100 United States Modern Coin”. Likewise! And, I hope we won’t be drinking diet cola around here. The TOP 100 most deserving U.S. modern coins will hopefully be the components of this set!

The 1972 Type 2 Eisenhower Dollar is the key coin to the entire series. This variety was only struck from one known reverse die. This is one of the primary reasons why there are so few examples available compared to any other date and mint mark of this series. All 1972 Eisenhower Dollars should illustrate several countries or islands below Florida but on the 1972 Type 2 coins the islands are very flat and almost indistinguishable.
The 1972 Type 2 Eisenhower Dollar was accidentally struck with a reverse die intended for proof coins only. A typical circulation strike die producing Eisenhower Dollars at the time was producing about 100,000 coins each. Therefore, more than likely less than 40,000 coins of this variety exist in all grades combined since many of them circulated and have considerable wear making them hard to identify. Also, many others coins have been lost over the years.
MS65: In MS65 it is a very difficult coin to obtain and commands thousands of dollars.
MS66: In MS66 grade it is practically unheard of and it usually brings well in the five figures.
