- stgecko I generally collect raw coins. Few moderns would I have concerns of authenticity and since I don’t intend on selling any of them the “grade” is irrelevant for me…I’ll let my heirs deal with “value” when I go toes up, six feet down.[stgecko] I generally collect raw coins. - I get what you're saying. But with your coin collection, I would have a list of what you have and what they are generally worth.
Because if your family goes to sell them after you pass, and they have no clue of value.. someone is going to take advantage of them and rip them off.
I would also suggest leaving them a coin dealer(s) contact info that you trust to take them to.I get what you're saying. - ToddPollock while my hope is that my children or grandchildren will take over the assorted areas of interest and expand on what I am able to pass on I know that’s a bit idealistic and have created very detailed spreadsheets of my collection as well as lists of sites and resources to understand value and the qualifier that if selling to a dealer that expect a 30-40% off retail as they have overhead and need to turn a profit. I agree that leaving heirs without resources would sadly lead them into being taken advantage of. I’d love to think numismatics to be the pinnacle of honesty and integrity but sadly we know that not to be true at all levels of the hobby and business aspects.[ToddPollock] while my hope is that my children or grandchildren will take over the assorted areas of interest and expand on what I am able to pass on I know that’s a bit idealistic and have created very detailed spreadsheets of my collection as well as lists of sites and resources to understand value and the qualifier that if selling to a dealer that expect a 30-40% off retail as they have overhead and need to turn a profit. - I can understand the heirs part but it doesn't apply to my situation as I have no heirs. So I see that as far as money is concerned I wanted to get my money back or more. And as I see it it's done with perfect coins graded by the big two companies. You are right it is hard to find fault with the new coins as the mint has their process down to a science. I do get them as the mint puts them out. So I have the originals and get them as they are produced straight from the mint.I can understand the heirs part but it doesn't apply to my situation as I have no heirs. - Some of my favorite Vintage Commemorative Half Dollars. The Oregon Trail, beautiful art work from James Earl Fraser and wife Laura Gartin Fraser; being from Texas I have to include the Centennial of Texas Independence…kind of unique that the Eagle is featured on the obverse; the Tercentenary of the Pilgrim landing; the Oakland Bay Bridge and the Huguenot-Walloon.Some of my favorite Vintage Commemorative Half Dollars. That’s actually my middle sized safe. The small one that I outgrew became my wife’s jewelry safe when I got what is now my commemoratives safe…then got this bigger safe and I’ve still spilled over into half of my gun safe.#VDBCoins … safe space is an ongoing problem. - I only have 21 Vintage Commemoratives but the moderns are a bit more involved. This safe is strictly commemoratives and shipwreck artifacts, which I guess in the broad sense of the term are commemoratives. I have artifacts from the Admiral Gardner of the East India Trading Company, the El Cazador of Spain, the S.S. Republic of the Civil War era and the Italian Cruise Liner S.S. Andrea Dorea that collided with the Swedish Cruise Liner S.S. Stockholm and sank in Nantucket Sound.I only have 21 Vintage Commemoratives but the moderns are a bit more involved.
