Jefferson Nickels | MyCollect

I'd like to get input on how you collect nickels. Lately I've been trying to recreate an album that I did as a kid of Jefferson Nickels and I'm using the Wittman albums for that. My goal is to fill them up with MS grade coins. I'm not looking for full steps or really high grades (IE MS66 and above). I figure that this will make a really nice set and satisfy my need to recreate a set that I did as a kid. Just for clarification my collection as a kid was not a MS set but everything was VF and above.

What I'm really curious about is how do people collect Jefferson Nickels? Do you collect them in slabs, albums, folders? What grade do you require for your collection?

1953-D does have a D/D that might be what someone means by the DDO on the label. The coin can not be cameo, as it is a regular business strike coin. Cameo is for proof issues only when it comes to nickels.

  dusti11g The beauty of this series is that completing an MS63 or better set is achievable and not very expensive. Also, the Wartime Silver Alloy (1942-1945) in good grades are still to be found. I've found proofs in bank rolls. The dates in the 30's in MS65 range from a low of $15.00 to a high $85.00 (1939-D)

  dusti11g Sorry, it has been awhile since I've posted as I'm recovering from the Hurricane that went by where I live in Pinellas County, Florida. To answer your question, there are several schools of thought. One, is that error coins are a fools errand as they occur only when the minting process goes wrong. The other is that they are very important to collectors as they are extremely rare for some and not so rare for others. For me, I would rather have a PR70 coin instead of an error coin. Also, as a hoarder of both wheat and copper pennies, I have been known to go through rolls of 1955's to see if I could find a DD in the wild. That is one of the amazing features of this hobby/obsession. For more information on error coins, both the Cherry pickers guide or Breen's encyclopedia would be a great place to start. Also the online PCGS guide do list the value for some error coins. All the best in your quest.

I've been getting back into organizing my collect after a long absence. I have been hoarding Jefferson nickels for the better part of 20 years and it has been very enjoyable filling out this series. I've actually found a 2016-s proof in one of the rolls I've gone through along with a undated Buffalo nickel. I'm so glad I got the 1939-s in MS63 years ago as I was very surprised at the current value this specimen.
