  • SOLD 1876 20C MS64 PCGS CAC

Derived from a modest mintage of merely 14,640 pieces, this 1876 Twenty Cent piece is a rarity. Obtaining a preferred high-grade specimen can be a challenging endeavor. Despite the lack of favor during its original minting period, attributed to its resemblance to the quarter dollar and the ensuing confusion, this peculiar denomination has garnered interest today. Specialists in the series and type collectors, eager to encompass this short-lived series, actively seek out this denomination. A pleasing near-Gem issue, this coin exhibits highly original features. Its surfaces display a light silver tone with an overlay of pinkish gold and subtle pastel light blue. Notably, a lamination mark prevents it from attaining the Gem grade, situated near Star 1. This coin makes for a fantastic addition for collectors in search of a type coin or a valuable inclusion in a box of 20. This particular near-Gem example, with its low mintage, fetched $2,880 01/24 HA, while a MS65 sold for $5,288 2021 LE.

  • Added this vibrant 1876 to the double dime proof set. This issue had a mintage of 1150 pieces and this one is graded PR64 CAC. It is pedigreed to the McClure collection which was auctioned by HA in 2016, and was originally in an NGC PR64 CAC holder.

  • Picked this CC up recently—MS 62 CAC. I already have a higher graded example, but I really liked the look of this one, and if I didn't have the nicer coin, I'd be happy to have this one as my type example. It's more silvery/gray in-hand than the TV.

  • I viewed this PR66+DCAM 20c Sailor Head ex-Simpson pattern at FUN last week. The deep, bright reflectivity of such a high end piece is pretty wild, although I'm not sure how I feel about an aluminum coin.

  • Quite a few 20c pieces coming up in the Heritage FUN Auction in a couple weeks.

The star is an 1875 OGH MS66 CAC *GOLD* stickered, beautifully toned example. MS67 is top pop for this year (pop 3) and the last one sold for $43,200 in 2020.

No 1877 Proofs (a coin I need), but if you're looking for an 1878, you'll have your pick. I'm planning to view them all during lot viewing later this week.

Good luck to any who may be bidding.

  • For Sale - 1875-CC 20 Cent PCGS MS63 with CAC. Only 9 out of 146 with a CAC!

There have been 146 1875-CC Twenty Cent Pieces graded MS63 (87 by PCGS and 59 by NGC). At this price point, chances are high that most have been submitted to CAC. Of those 146, only 9 coins have a CAC sticker, and this is one of them!

I consigned this coin in the current Legend Regency Auction 61, Lot #83, as I upgraded this with a new purchase of an MS64.

    Here is their description:

DESIRABLE DOUBLE DIME. Choice surfaces are blanketed in snow white mint frost and luster, the motifs exhibit a crisp strike, much sharper than normally seen with strong hair strand definition and complete wing and breast feathers on the eagle. With magnification, a couple of light tick marks here and there are noted, but all are commensurate with the grade.

In high demand, as the only affordable, collectible Carson City Mint issue for the series, as the 1876-CC an extreme rarity that is out of reach for most collectors.

PCGS 87, NGC 59, CAC 9. The PCGS Price Guide list is $4,000. Since you have to go ALL THE WAY BACK to December 2015 to find an auction record for a CAC example, where it sold for $2,585, we expect not only a record price for this coin but a plethora of bids. Best of luck!

The current bid is $3,200. A 17.5% Buyers Premium is added on to the winning hammer price.

  • Added this Carson City issue to my set this week. The CC is the priciest of the circulating issues (excluding the rarity 76-CC), and often comes weakly struck on the eagle’s wing/head and shield. This one is sharply struck, original, and CAC approved at MS64. CAC/CACG Coins Seated Type

  • Couldn't help myself when this VB3 slab with a double dime came up—there's an XF45 out there, but this is the 2nd highest grade in a VB3 slab.

  • Picked up a very sweet new addition to the double dime collection recently. Photos to come once she’s safely in hand. Not a ‘75 or ‘76
