PCGS confirms the scarcity of this date by listing this coin in its half Eagles' population -this coin comes in as # 3 or # 4 . It is listed in the condition census report for 1840 d. It is especially rare in Mint State. What I particularly like about this piece is its 'surface preservation' -no scuffs, dings, and no 'bagmarks' of any consequence. A small planchet defect on the reverse is not distracting. If the luster was just a tad more pronounced, it probably be a MS 63. A very nice Dahlonega Piece indeed ! Currently not for sale.

Coin of the day 8/13/23. No real backstory on this coin, but this is the image I use as the background screen on my iPhone. The coin itself is a PCGS AU55 that is currently part of my Circulated 19th Century Type sets at NGC and PCGS. I really like how photogenic this coin is.

Coin of the day 8/6/23. Now in a PCGS MS65 holder, this coin was a souvenir from a business trip I made to Geneva Switzerland about 5 years ago. I picked it up in a small coin shop raw for the spot price of gold.
