- Sea salvaged Philippine peso
“Early in 1942, 15,700,000 Peso pieces were crated and dumped into the sea near Corregidor to avoid capture by the Japanese. This measure was largely successful, as the Japanese did not succeed in raising many pieces. After the war, from 1945 to 1948 under supervision of the Bureau of the Treasury, 9,000,000 Pesos were retrieved. Still later, under supervision of the Central Bank of the Philippines, another 1,300,000 Pesos were salvaged. By 1958, the total of Pesos not yet found was about five million pieces.”
"A great majority of the salvaged "War Pesos" will show some signs of their prolonged salt-water submersion. Most often found on the coins is a dark corrosive substance very resistant to any type of cleaning."
