- I acquired several Ike proofs lately looking for varieties. This is a 72 s, does this look like the DDO FS 101 to you? I have one graded bu PCGS and this one looks like a stronger DDO to me. - I know there are a number of Ike varieties that people collect but I don't thing I have seen another 1974-S Silver Proof Ike with a die gouge like this. - ToddPollock We have never seen this, but since the 74-S Silver proof is not known to have any major varieties, we also haven’t been hunting for this very aggressively. Best of luck to the owner in trying to establish an added value for this.[ToddPollock] We have never seen this, but since the 74-S Silver proof is not known to have any major varieties, we also haven’t been hunting for this very aggressively. - As a former member of the Ike Group, I give you the same recommendation that they used to find amazing coins... Buy coins in OGP off sites like eBay and learn that pick up points for the various varieties. They aren't so rare that you won't succeed with some effort. As a former member of the Ike Group, I give you the same recommendation that they used to find amazing coins... - Do you think the 1976 Ike types should both be part of the basic set?
Argument for: The change is pretty major/obvious and clearly an intentional change to the coin's design. Most (if not all) published albums/folders include holes for both types. The T1 was in 1975 mint sets so is kind of like the "1975 Ike". The pcgs registry used to have both types in the basic set.
Argument against: At some point in the mid/late 2000s the pcgs registry removed both types from the basic set and that's the way it is today. We never did find out their reasoning as to why.

- 1972 Eisenhower Dollar Type 2 PCGS MS-66+ (CAC Green) (Toned)- hammered today at auction (as the pop 1/0) at what appears to be a weak amount ($14,100) for a CAC approved pop 1 key to the series. An example of what can happen when a single super strong player in the series (myself) doesn’t participate on a coin. Congratulations to the winning bidder though in what was a 200+ bid auction. As always, just my 2 cents.1972 Eisenhower Dollar Type 2 PCGS MS-66+ (CAC Green) (Toned)- hammered today at auction (as the pop 1/0) at what appears to be a weak amount ($14,100) for a CAC approved pop 1 key to the series. - Pat: Happy to answer. As you know, CAC stickers MS66 coins ignoring whether they are plus or not. A couple of my current MS66 coins (including a CAC stickered coin) I felt were a bit stronger examples than this particular coin so I didn’t pursue it. I’m banking on this particular coin date becoming pop 2 or 3 in MS66+ with the next year or so to come.
On a related subject, losing the “triple weight” for Registry set purposes pop 1’s I am no stranger to and let’s not “pick on” Clad Ikes. At one point, I had around 25-30 pop 1/0 triple weight clad quarters (1965-98) in my PCGS Registry set during the 17 year run where I maintained the #1 clad Registry set (now #2). The other day my “sea” of yellow highlighted pop 1 clad quarters went from a stream down to a shallow creek as I lost yet another one and I am currently down to just -2- of the pop 1/0 clad quarters (down from 25-30 a few years back). Yes- it hurts! Soon, I will dust off the former pop 1’s and pay once again to have them all regraded if my shallow creek starts to drive me crazy. So easily predictable-yes?Pat: Happy to answer. - Tonight the second of the two 1976-S Ikes (40% silver) grading MS69 sold for $18,700 (including 10% BP). A few weeks back, Heritage sold the first coin at $18,600 (including B.P.). P.G. on the coins is $25,000. I thought both auction companies did exceptionally well for their consignors. Tonight’s price was impressive considering the top buyer in the country already bought one at the Heritage auction. P.G. shouldn’t exceed $20,000 in light of these 2 public auction sales in my opinion. If the quality standard for this grade stays constant at PCGS, I suspect it will be harder and harder to maintain even a $20,000 valuation moving forward as the coin becomes pop 3, pop 4, pop 5. We shall see. Case in point..
Tonight a 1976-D Ty 1 PCGS-MS67+ Clad Ike fetched less than $11,000 (including B.P.) against a $30,000 P.G. valuation! I owned the coin as the pop 1/0 before this second specimen was recently graded and the price set at $30,000. I personally figured I likely had a $20,000-$25,000 pop 1/0 valued coin. I did not participate in the auction tonight of the pop 2/0 coin. I am not sure what I have now following the sale of the pop 2/0 tonight for just under $11,000.

- Yours is CAC too if I remember correctly. I have a 76-d T1 graded ms67 in 2009 that was listed as pop 3/0 at the time but I essentially treated it as a pop 1 as another was a mislabeled T2 coin and the original one in James Sego's set was "an embarrassment to pcgs and my set", his words. I'd have to assume mine should make ms67+ (and cac) but it has never been sent in and I know there's no guarantees. I paid $9500 for it, most I had spent on any coin up until 2022.Yours is CAC too if I remember correctly. - Tonight at GC one of the pop 11/0 1972 Eisenhower Dollar Type 2 PCGS MS-66 came up for auction. With a PG of $10,500 last time I check, the (average quality) specimen sold tonight for around $13,000 including BP. Certainly an impressive figure on this key to the MS Ike series, especially without a CAC sticker. I own 3/11 MS66 coins (-1- CAC and -2- non CAC) in my #1 Registry set for MS & Proof Ikes including major varieties. So, that leaves just 8 remaining coins for the rest of the collecting community. Obviously, Mr Hansen owns one or two of those 8 as well, so there are really about only 6 available pop top MS66 coins excluding my collection and Mr. Hansen’s collection(s). Tonight one of those 6 available pieces came up for auction and greatly outperformed full PG! - I don't have a T2. Does anyone know if the mint intentionally (or carelessly) went ahead with the uses of 3 different reverse dies or was this an unintentional error? It seems like the change from T1 to T3 was certainly an intentional design change. I am not a variety collector per se, but probably should put a T2 in my collection and call it part of my basic set (like I do with 1976 T1 and T2). If I owned one that would be an easy way to solve the problem of "if" I should own one. The problem is there's actually only 2 or 3 of them that I would ever pay up for, so at least for now I'll have to go without.I don't have a T2. - Got this 1972 IKE Type 2 a few months ago. I know, I know, its only AU53, but thought I would pic up a cheap example for my collection. - Here is a pic of the Unique Proof 1976 No S Silver Eisenhower Dollar, which is also the only Proof Silver Dollar for our Bicentennial year that has the Ty 2 Reverse. The other roughly 4,000,000 Proof Silver Ikes struck for our Bicentennial are all Ty 1 Reverse Ike Dollars.

Struck at Philadelphia to see how the design would look in proof, not just a forgotten mint mark, if I recall. I think I see a few differences in the obverse fonts. Its never gone up for auction. PCGS price guide says $850k but I've heard the owner has 7 figure offers.this is a true prototype, right?
