Thanks, interesting I don't know its origin—whether the coin maker overheated it or it was deliberately and violently heated—but that's how it was when I got it.

Looks like heat damage. Like when you throw a coin in a fire. It causes the clad layers to bubble up. I think it might have something to do with the copper core having a lower melting point than the cupronickel clad layers. Or maybe they expand at different rates. But it doesn't happen on solid alloys like bronze pennies, or nickels.
